Opinion: Justin

Good Morning Professor Chillarege. The SYS579 Software Systems Engineering course was a pleasantly unexpected view on software systems engineering. I signed up for the course thinking that the majority of the class was going to talk about software design cycles and methods. While we did touch on those during the first couple weeks of the course, the course took a dive deeper into UML and design analysis. These were concepts that I had not been exposed to before and will bring value to me in my systems engineering career. The most valuable concept in this course was the defect analysis through ODC. This is a tool that I could see myself using in the future on various design programs even if it isn’t software related. The ability to open defects, classify them according to impact, trigger, type, and source categories and break these down into charts that give insight into the data is a great skill that I learned in this course. Even while still learning this content, I could already think about situations both in my professional and personal life where I could apply these concepts to identify where the cause of the major flaws occur and see where my effort should be focused to improve the overall system. Even if software systems are not your focus, this course still could bring great insights into your system. Overall, it was a great course that taught me a lot about how systems are created and improved.

All the best,

Justin Friend
